Resistance is never futile. They have mountains to run to in the west if need be. It will be Russia's next Afghanistan. Putin will be bogged down by well armed guerilla resistance. Attrition over the course of a few years will destroy what little is left of the Russian economy. Russia has never been weaker in my life time than today under Putin's and his last gasps of testosterone and late stage syphilis.
