Recently, someone hit a telephone pole out where we live. It was the middle of the night. Long and short the driver was ok but the SUV and the pole were totaled.

We called the cops.

Within minutes they came. Soon after so did an ambulance, a tow truck, a fire truck, and several other trucks needed to tear out and replace the pole.

The situation stayed safe, secure, and far too well illuminated for 1:30 in the morning on a weekday.

There must have been at least 20 different people doing their jobs as unsung heroes.

Not only did we never lose power, but the Consumers Energy guys completely tore out and replaced the pole before the sun had a chance to rise.

Looking at the accident site under today’s sun, you can barely tell that anything happened at all.

One fool driver and his busted-up SUV gave 20 dedicated Americans a job this night.

In another country, the SUV would still be there, stripped of anything worth anything. The power would be literally hanging by the tread of the existing cables. The driver, maybe dead and mugged, his body…
